FAQs: Group Sailing Trips
1. Do I need to know how to sail?
Not at all! Our guided sailing trips are beginner-friendly, and no prior sailing experience is required. Our professional skippers, guides, and daily briefings ensure you’re comfortable and confident throughout your trip. If you're travelling as a group and want more independence, you can choose to skipper your own yacht (with an ICC or equivalent) or add a skipper for extra support.
2. How long are the trips?
Our trips are typically two weeks, giving you time to fully unwind and explore your destination. For those short on time or new to Mariner Boating, we also offer one-week trips designed as a perfect introduction to our sailing holidays.
3. What is included in the trip price?
Each itinerary specifies the inclusions, but most trips cover your yacht, accommodation on board, and skipper (if booking a cabin). Our expert Australian guides, alongside a local skipper, are included on every trip to ensure you feel welcome and supported throughout your journey. They’ll assist with the yachts, berthing, and navigation, while sharing their local knowledge of sights and activities along the way. From the moment you board, they’re there to make your sailing experience smooth, enjoyable, and stress-free. Check your selected trip’s details for specifics about inclusions.
4. What’s not included?
While some meals are included, you’ll shop locally for meals not included, such as breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Berthing fees on leisure days are not included, and you’ll need to allow for fuel costs. For cabin bookings, please allow approx. 100 EUR for a local "kitty" to contribute to fuel plus the skipper’s meals and gratuities. Flights, travel insurance, land arrangements, and personal expenses are also not included. We'll always outline any exclusions clearly so there are no surprises.
5. Are these trips suitable for solo travellers?
Absolutely! We offer single-occupancy cabins with private bathrooms so you can enjoy your own space. Our tailored single cabin pricing is not simply double the twin-share rate. Plus, our small group environment makes it easy to connect with fellow travellers.
6. What kind of yachts do you use?
We sail modern, comfortable yachts ranging from 40 to 50 feet, including monohulls and catamarans. These yachts, provided by trusted operators, are usually less than four years old and equipped with private cabins, private bathrooms, and spacious areas to relax both on deck and below.
7. What is life on board like?
Life aboard is relaxed and social. Mornings might start with a swim off the swim deck, followed by scenic sailing or excursions. You can lounge on deck with a book, cook in the yacht’s galley, or dine al fresco. For more details, visit our "Typical Day in Paradise" page to see what life on board is really like.
8. Who will I be travelling with?
Our groups typically include adventurous, ocean-loving travellers aged 40 to 65. They enjoy staying active, indulging in good food and wine, and sharing stories. We’re not fine dining types, but we love a hearty meal and great company. Each trip has about 20 participants across three to four yachts, creating a friendly and intimate community.
9. What safety measures are in place?
Your safety is our priority. Our yachts are well-maintained, and our professional skippers and guides provide daily briefings and support. We also ensure you’re comfortable with safety equipment and sailing procedures.
10. What makes Mariner Boating special?
With over 35 years of experience, we’ve perfected the balance of guided exploration, hidden gems, and iconic highlights. Our Australian team, led by Sarah, personally accompanies each trip, ensuring your experience is seamless, enjoyable, and unforgettable.
FAQs: Bareboat Charters
1. Do I need a license to charter a yacht?
Yes, a license is required to charter a yacht. The International Certificate of Competence (ICC) is widely recognised and can be obtained in Australia through an RYA Training Centre. Requirements vary by destination, so reach out to us for details.
2. Where can I charter a yacht?
We offer bareboat charters in the world’s top destinations, from the Mediterranean to French Polynesia and beyond. Not sure where to go? Contact us for tailored advice based on your preferences and experience.
3. How long do I need to book a yacht for?
Most charters are for a minimum of seven days, especially in peak season. Contact us to explore your options.
4. Do I have to start on a Saturday?
In the Mediterranean, most charters run Saturday to Saturday. Other regions, like the Caribbean or Pacific, are more flexible. Let us know your plans, and we’ll find the best options.
5. Can I do a one-way charter?
Yes, one-way charters are possible in some locations. Availability depends on the destination and operator. Contact us to find out about routes and options.
6. What’s included with a bareboat charter?
We work with a number of operators, but as a guide your yacht, navigational and safety equipment, bed linen, towels, equipped galley/kitchen, and final cleaning are usually included. Additional items like skipper hire, provisioning, or water toys can be arranged for a fee. We will provide a full breakdown of inclusions and any mandatory extra in your quote.
7. How do you ensure the yachts are in good condition?
We work with trusted operators whose yachts meet our high standards for quality and maintenance. Our partners are experienced in delivering exceptional sailing experiences and are committed to ensuring their yachts are in excellent condition. However, we recommend choosing a yacht no older than three to four years to avoid potential issues.
8. What insurance do I need?
We highly recommend personal travel insurance covering personal accident, medical expenses, cancellation, and liability. Charter operators also require a security deposit, which acts as insurance for the yacht. This deposit is refundable when the yacht is returned without damage and can also be reduced by a waiver fee or covered by external yacht insurance providers.
9. Can I celebrate a special occasion on a charter?
Absolutely! Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or once-in-a-lifetime trip, our team can help you customise your charter to make it unforgettable. From luxury yachts to unique itineraries, we’ve got you covered.
10. How do I book or get more information?
Reach out to our friendly team via phone or email, and we’ll guide you through the process. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or planning your first charter, we’re here to make it easy!
